I have only quoted some of the persons mentioned in the list who are not Police but there, I think are quite sufficient to show that the list is not manufactured to get the police into trouble.
It must further be remembered that these lists were produced at the Magistracy upon the trial of Shaw Sim. Every possible effort was made on behalf of Shaw Sim, both solicitor and barrister being employed, and it is quite possible that his plea of guilty was put forward when it was seen to be hopeless to expect any chance of acquittal, in order to prevent the witnesses blurting out the contents of the lists or being asked as to why it was that the Police did not break up the establishment.

I was informed that after Shaw Sim was told that the witnesses against him had said nothing against the police, he was informed that it was a good thing for him that he had said nothing against the police as he would have been stabbed. This may or may not be true but it shows at any rate that the persons connected with the case were most anxious to keep all mention of the police out.
As far as my experience of the Chinese in Hong Kong goes, the Chinese give Europeans little credit for knowing very much about Chinese books and accounts and provided...
